Rethinking Incarceration
I posted an event via facebook about the Rethinking Incarceration group my friend and I are involved with. My cousin is a correctional officer. This was the response.
Cousin: Love you Samantha but the people you are talking about need to be were they are at.I know first hand.
Sam: I disagree. There needs to be reform. Many prisons are becoming privatized, thus allowing them to become essentially businesses. Statistics concerning different races and their incarceration rates are disturbing. I am not justifying one's crimes, but I disagree with the system as it currently stands. Prisoners are not animals. They are a part of humanity, too.
Cousin: Not animals? RAPE LITTLE KIDS,KILL LITTLE KIDS,KILL AND RAPE FOR DRUGS,KILL MOM AND DAD AND THEN EAT THEIR BRAINS,KILL THE WIFE, KILL THE DAD,KILL THE MOM,KILL THE SISTER,MAKE A LITTLE 2 YEAR OLD BOY FUCK A CHICKEN!!!! GROW UP!! Have fun with all of your songs and pictures.YOU SHOULD BE THANKING THE CORRECTION OFFICERS FOR WHAT WE DO!!!!!!!!
Sam: You have an incredibly difficult job.
However, I don't think you understand what the Rethinking Incarceration group is about. It is not about correctional officers being bad people. It is not about justifying crimes. There is no need to jump to conclusions. I really don't understand what you mean by my songs and pictures. I am an adult at a university. My learning is not based on songs and pictures and there is no need to condescend to me. My job as a student is to question things and educate myself on the world. This is a topic I am currently exploring.
I do not think we will reach an agreed perspective. I respectfully agree to disagree.
....I found this response educational. He picked one phrase out of many to fight. That was his only focus. He never mentioned the privatization or race issue. His examples of crimes are not normal crimes. I think drugs are involved in the most crimes, yet that was only mentioned once, but with it came rape and murder. Just interesting.
You may have already been introduced to this but you might like "Are Prisons Obsolete?" by Angela Y. Davis. We read it in my gender class last semester. Basically we were focusing on how prison is just a spatial fix to the social problem of what to do with a bunch of people who can't make a living and can't fit into our society rather than as most people view prisons as keeping really bad people away from normal people.

I'm very excited about this! →
This is the first press I’ve ever gotten! Also, this is a super cool blog in general since I learned to play guitar by doing covers so I’m kind of obsessed with them…

Sorry, can't go to school today.
I need to catch a giant cube of ice falling from an airplane in Antarctica to extract a teddy bear from it and gently defrost it in my refrigerator before I can wake up…
Starting now,
I’ve realized that college is completely useless for me as far as getting a real job, although its fun and I don’t really want a real job. But I need to be honest with myself in that I’m always assuming I’ll do music after college but I’m putting it aside which is not really okay since it is my career plan. So starting now I’m taking my songbook with me,...
Proposal
In my dream someone proposed to me. It was the cutest way, they gave me like what looked like a check and a fortune cookie but on the paper it was like a word game and when I solved it and read it, it told me how much they cared about me and then when I opened the fortune cookie it was like a marry me cookie. heh, I guess I just thought, fortune cookies are like a continuing thing with matt and I...

You know what?
I think sometimes I’m bold. And I realize now that even when I feel lonely, I can be bold because I have loyal friends. It doesn’t ever matter what I do, even if someone was saying really witty mean things to me and my comeback was “yea, well… you suck” and looked really stupid and pitiful, all of my friends would laugh like it was the best they had ever heard and say...
